Patriotism is just a love of your country and its founding principles. It seems people these days want to try and make it a divisive issue, but that’s all it really is. Tradition can play a large role in that love. Rodeo is full of tradition. It also makes a point to respect and honor the traditions and symbols of the USA. I love how much respect and honor the American flag receives at a rodeo performance, but there are also enduring glimpses of other iconic symbols of the USA. I saw this one last year before the start of the 2021 Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo’s Friday night Bull Riding competition.

A Bald Eagle made an appearance at the start of the Friday night bull riding at the 2021 Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo. It would be in the arena during the singing of the National Anthem.

Loved the moment. The majestic Bald Eagle caught in gorgeous sunset light. These kinds of moments are part of the reason I love the photographing the sport of rodeo.

Memories Can Make It Worthwhile

It’s not exactly Singing in the Rain, but photographing in less-than-ideal weather is something you just do when you earn money with your camera. Wind whipping up? Rain starting to pour? It might be time to reach into the camera bag and pull out the emergency countermeasures (known by most people as lightweight windbreakers and plastic bags) and keep shooting.

While I have a lot of great photography related memories… a lot… I will always recall the freezing Sunday afternoon rain of the 2014 Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo. Despite it being early June, the downpour was frigid. My fingers were so cold they were basically stuck in the curved position of gripping my camera. On the positive side, at least I couldn’t drop my equipment in the mud.

Colorado cowboy Tyler Scales gritted out a rain-soaked ride for a solid 83-point score, which was the best bareback ride of the day.

I am a freelancer, so I get to choose what I cover and what I photograph. Ice cold rain is not something I typically enjoy (and I pity those that do), but I do love covering good rodeos and photo opportunities in the rain can be unique. So I stayed a while longer and I am glad I did.

While the crowd had already been sent home due to weather conditions, the rodeo action restarted hours later to finish up in front of empty stands.

Why am I glad I stayed? While I was able to use some of the shots for my published article, the real reason I am glad I stayed is the memories that were made. I will always have the memories that go with those photos. Was it miserable weather for photographing? Yep. Did I want to leave sooner than I did? Yes again. But now, when I go back and look at the photos, I get to smile as I recall being there.

Sometimes I can’t believe I get paid to write and photograph. What is that old saying? Do what you love and love what you do.

I created a short video from some clips I shot while interviewing and photographing the Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo volunteers upgrading the arena dirt in preparation for putting on their award winning rodeo! It is coming up quick — June 02-05, 2022!

Proving the Power of the Horse

A Pair of Related Colorado Companies Blaze a Trail by Taking What is Left Behind

Richer Lands Compost owner and manager Jonathan Whetstine (right) talks to an employee while the tractor creeps ahead during the turning of horse manure compost windrows. An Aeromaster turner is attached to the tractor and not only completely turns over the windrow, but also applies moisture and nutrients to the windrow while it does so.

A new article of mine is now out on the website of The Fence Post magazine and will be in their upcoming print edition (Monday May 02, 2022). Colorado Manure Hauling (CMH) and Richer Lands Compost are believed to be the only business combination in the country to perform the hauling and composting of equine waste to create a high-quality compost for commercial and residential use. While other businesses compost horse manure, they blend it with other organics. CMH and Richer Lands Compost look to be the only ones to use equine waste as a single-source for their final product.

https://www.thefencepost.com/news/the-source-is-the-horse-of-course/

I hope you enjoy the article and learning about how these Colorado companies are leading the way in creating high quality equine waste compost.
