My interview with ProRodeo Hall of Fame bareback cowboy Bobby Mote has been published. Mote was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame on July 16, 2022. He is a 4-time PRCA world champion bareback cowboy and a two-time PRCA reserve world champ who qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) 15 years in a row. I was able to speak with him before his acceptance speech at his induction ceremony. After photographing the practice session of the USAF Thunderbirds demonstration squadron on July 25, I was able to also photograph the 2022 Wings Over Warren Air Show at the F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, WY on July 27, 2022. I will post more photos as I work on them from the show, but I will start with this one that I like quite a bit.

USAF Thunderbirds

I had the privilege of being able to photograph a practice session the USAF Thunderbirds team was performing in preparation for an upcoming air show at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming. The flying was impressive and inspiring and the team members I was able to interview were just great to speak with about what they do and their thoughts about being a part of the Thunderbirds team. I have had a bit of time to be able to work on just a few photos, so far, and thought I would share them. I will be putting together an article with photos for publication in the near future.

More Than Just A Rodeo

A new photo spread of mine has just been published. While the four-day Pikes Peak or Bust NFR Open rodeo was another sell out affair, organizers pride themselves on offering more than just a rodeo. Over time, they have grown the event’s “Fan Zone” entertainment to become a popular family-friendly destination and the rodeo’s long association with helping active duty military families blends a military flavor into all the proceedings at the historic Norris Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs. https://www.thefencepost.com/news/more-than-just-a-rodeo/

The Fan Zone at the 2022 Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo was filled with family-friendly activities of an agricultural nature, including this popular petting zoo tent that housed a pony, a donkey, some goats, sheep and even a llama.

Colorado Springs Rodeo Strikes Gold

My latest article with photos is published on The Fence Post magazine’s website and will be in their upcoming print edition. It is about the inaugural NFR Open that took place at the 2022 Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo in Colorado Springs. The renamed “NFR Open powered by RAM” used to be called the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo and was help for a number of years down in Kissimmee, FL. Moving the circuit championship rodeo to Colorado brought close to the PRCA headquarters and made it more centrally located for the contestants to access. The high-profile, million dollar rodeo made a smooth transition to the 6,500-seat Norris Penrose Event Center and the long-running Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo, with all five performances sold out in 2022. 2021 WPRA champion Jordon Briggs (daughter of barrel racing legend Kristie Peterson) and her popular horse “Rollo” blazed the arena for a 17.17-second time in the sudden death Gold Buckle Round of the Pikes Peak or Bust’s NFR Open on Saturday July 16. Although it was the third fastest time of the entire four-day rodeo, Briggs and Rollo placed second behind Cheyenne Allan’s electric 17.04 time in the championship round.

Big Rodeo Under the Bright Lights

I am currently swamped with photos and interviews from covering the 2022 Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo’s inaugural NFR Open in Colorado Springs, CO (July 13-16). While I hope to be able to come up for air sometime soon, I thought I would at least get out a pic of how nice it was to cover a high profile rodeo under the lights on Saturday night in front of a sold out crowd. The Norris Penrose Arena in Colorado Springs is a gorgeous setting with views of the Rocky Mountains.

The inaugural NFR Open held at the 2022 Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo in Colorado Springs was a big success in its relocation of the national circuit finals rodeo format from Florida to Colorado. The million dollar rodeo attracted 200 contestants and sold out crowds to the 6,500-seat Norris Penrose Arena for its Wednesday-Saturday run of five rodeo performances, including the high stakes Gold Buckle Round under the lights on Saturday night to determine the winners who would be crowned as circuit national champions.

South Dakota competitor Chance Schott was the only bull rider to make a successful ride in Greeley Stampede’s 2022 short go (June 30). As a result, his electric 88-point ride aboard Beutler and Son Rodeo Company’s “Overpass” earned him $5,000 for the short go and another $3,630 for winning the average at the 100th Greeley Stampede.

Dodge Bull at the 100th Greeley Stampede

So you think your job is rough? Try having your job description include staying as close as possible to charging bulls inside an enclosed arena while trying not to be hit or trampled. That would be the American Bull Fighting competition held at the 100th Greeley Stampede in Greeley, CO (July 02, 2022). My photo spread of the event is now published online. Sometimes the smart bulls just figure out how to hit bull fighters. Zigging when he should have zagged, Chris Monroe got caught by the head and horns of a bull during first round action of the 2022 American Bull Fighting competition on July 02 and did not qualify to advance.

Killer Ride Sets A New Arena Record!

Saddle bronc cowboy Hardy Braden rode one of the most famous bucking horses in the business — Killer Bee — for a new arena record at the 100th Greeley Stampede in Greeley, CO during the final round of rodeo action on June 30, 2022. The 89.50-point score bested the previous record of 88 points set by Wade Sundell in 2018 and tied by Ryder Wright in 2019. “It is quite something, actually,” said Braden when told his score set a new record. “I am kind of at a loss.  It was the 100^th anniversary, what better way to do that then get an arena record and win the 100^th.”

Oklahoma saddle bronc rider Hardy Braden drew what was announced as “the most famous bucking horse of all time” in Killer Bee from Beutler and Son Rodeo Company, and the duo put on a big show that culminated in an arena record 89.50 points and the overall title at the 100th Greeley Stampede (June 30, 2022).

Pretty cool moment to see in person and nice to be able to talk to the humble cowboy about it. A new article about it will be published soon in The Fence Post magazine with more conversation and more photos.
