My article and photos of the first annual Stockyards Beef Festival at the 2023 National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO seems to have gained some traction after it was published online by The Fence Post magazine on 01/20/2023. There were a lot of social media shares and interactions, which is a good thing for a great event like that one. You can still find it on The Fence Post’s website.

But it has also now been reprinted in the Hereford America magazine and is available to read as a PDF on their website. The article starts on page 51 of their February 2023 issue.

You can also go straight to Hereford America’s magazine archives and look at the issue there or you can read it right here. It is a good industry magazine and (again) my article starts on Page 51.

New Rodeo Photo Spread is Out!

A new photo spread of mine has been published in The Fence Post magazine. You can see 19 of my photos from the 2022 Mountain States Circuit Finals rodeo in Loveland, CO (Oct. 21-22) on The Fence Post’s website. Just follow the link or click on the image below. There was some good drama there, this year, including the barrel racing title being decided by .01-seconds, a permit holder winning the bareback title, and a bull rider overcoming injury to win it all. https://www.thefencepost.com/news/2022-mountain-states-circuit-finals-rodeo/

Lamar, CO barrel racer Shali Lord and her 2010 mare Frosted In Fame (“CeCe”) dig around around the third barrel on their way to a quick 15.28-second time during Saturday night’s final round of action at the 2022 Mountain States Circuit Finals in Loveland, CO. The time helped Lord earn the average title by just .01-seconds over Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi and secure an invitation to the million dollar 2023 NFR Open in Colorado Springs.

I hope you enjoy the photos from the rodeo. Thanks for stopping by!

Remembering Baxter Black

Among the ranching, western and agricultural communities, Baxter Black’s columns and humor throughout the last 40+ years have been required reading. He put into plain words, with generous portions of humor, what was often thought to be difficult to communicate to those outside the agricultural community. As a large animal veterinarian, his credentials were always impeccable. And his columns and later books only upped the ante. Baxter Black passed away at the age of 77 in Benson, Ariz., on June 10, 2022. He will be greatly missed.

Black penned over 30 books and his syndicated column appeared in more than 100 publications across the country. He was a Christian and that faith and worldview infused all of his works.

Rachel Gabel over at The Fence Post magazine just put out a nice article about him and I wanted to share the link.

Queens Aren’t Just in England…

Some of the most popular people at a rodeo are the rodeo queens. They work hard inside and outside the arenas throughout every rodeo and they do a great job of being ambassadors of the sport to younger generations, as well as adults who aren’t familiar with rodeo and the western/agricultural way of life. I had the opportunity to have a conversation with 2022 Miss Rodeo Colorado Ashley Baller during a break between the Saturday afternoon and Saturday night rodeos at the 2022 Elizabeth Stampede in Elizabeth, CO. I will be turning it into a Q&A that will be published soon in The Fence Post magazine, but wanted to give a shout out to all the rodeo queens that will be working hard during the busy summer rodeo season.

2022 Miss Rodeo Colorado, Ashley Baller, carried the Colorado state flag in front of a sell-out crowd before the start of Sunday afternoon’s Red, White and Blue Rodeo at the 2022 Elizabeth Stampede (June 05).

The Colorado Agricultural Leadership Founding Foundation (CALF) held its annual Farm & Ranch Day on May 28, 2022 on the grounds of the historic Lowell Ranch outside of Castle Rock, CO. CALF’s mission is to connect youth and agriculture and raise the awareness of the importance of agriculture for our future. I am working on a story and photos to be published in The Fence Post magazine in the near future, but created a short video of the event to be shared and enjoyed in the meantime. It is located on the Rumble platform. Just click on the link or the image to go to the video.

Cattle Dogs Are Cool!

On the last weekend of the 2022 National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO, the cattle dogs showed their stuff. Watching top-notch working dogs in action is always a treat and this year was no different. My article and photos about the cattle dog competition are now online at The Fence Post’s website. Use the following link — https://www.thefencepost.com/news/dog-day-afternoon-2/ — or click on the photo to take you to the article.

As one of the cattle decides to run in a different direction, the dog is there in a burst of speed and attitude to remind it to cooperate. Athleticism, quickness, and even the flash of teeth are requirements in a good cattle dog. “(Your dog has) to have that strength. That presence,” said 2022 NWSS Cattle Dog competition winner James Butler when discussing cattle dogs at the NWSS venue.

I was able to get some one-on-one time with NWSS President and CEO Paul Andrews on the last day of 2022’s 116th year of the NWSS (Sunday January 23). We discussed the challenges the NWSS had to go through in 2022 as well as looking ahead to the future of the historic venue and its on-going billion dollar expansion project. The Fence Post magazine has published and posted the Q&A online.

Paul Andrews, President and CEO of the National Western Stock Show, rides into the Denver Coliseum arena while being announced to the crowd before the start of the championship round of rodeo at the 2022 NWSS. “This year was a must do,” said Andrews about the 2022 NWSS after 2021’s event was canceled due to COVID.

It’s Colorado Mead, Honey!!!

Actually… it is both! Colorado Mead AND Colorado Honey.

My article with photography about Honnibrook Craft Meadery (in Castle Rock, CO) using premium Colorado honey from Lockhart Honey Farms for award winning success is now posted on The Fence Post magazine’s website.

https://www.thefencepost.com/news/its-colorado-mead-honey/

DJ Kurtz (foreground) and Michael Fagan, co-owners of Honnibrook Craft Meadery in Castle Rock, CO, discuss their mead making process while premium monofloral Colorado honey from Lockhart Honey Farms flows from a 55-gallon drum into a tank that will blend the honey, water, yeast and other nutrients as it is pumped into large vats to create a new batch of craft mead. Open since 2019, Honnibrook has picked up numerous awards for its “light and refreshing” style of mead.

I had a great time talking with Kurtz and Fagan, as well as Leo and Laura Lockhart, for the article. Many thanks to all four for their courtesy and generosity with their schedules.

And in case you were wondering… the mead is excellent!
