The Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo designates its Sunday afternoon performance as the “Red, White and Blue Rodeo” and it is a “Stars and Stripes” affair to honor local service men and women both past and present. They really do a nice job of showing honor and respect for those who have served in the military, as well as honoring the patriotic symbols that harken back to the founding principles of our country. They rocked the singing of the National Anthem by bringing out this Bald Eagle and holding it aloft while it flapped its wings during the closing lines of the anthem. It was an inspiring sight and environment and I loved capturing it with my camera.

A sold out Sunday afternoon crowd at the 2022 Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo were
treated to the sight of our nation’s National Bird, the Bald Eagle, held aloft near
the end of the singing of the National Anthem before the start of action inside
the arena. The third and last PRCA rodeo performance on Sunday afternoon
is the Stampede’s Red, White & Blue Rodeo.

How cool is that?

Rodeo and Patriotism

Patriotism is just a love of your country and its founding principles. It seems people these days want to try and make it a divisive issue, but that’s all it really is. Tradition can play a large role in that love. Rodeo is full of tradition. It also makes a point to respect and honor the traditions and symbols of the USA. I love how much respect and honor the American flag receives at a rodeo performance, but there are also enduring glimpses of other iconic symbols of the USA. I saw this one last year before the start of the 2021 Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo’s Friday night Bull Riding competition.

A Bald Eagle made an appearance at the start of the Friday night bull riding at the 2021 Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo. It would be in the arena during the singing of the National Anthem.

Loved the moment. The majestic Bald Eagle caught in gorgeous sunset light. These kinds of moments are part of the reason I love the photographing the sport of rodeo.

Today is Flag Day in the United States of America — June 14, 2021.

So what else could I possibly do but put together a patriotic American Flag image out of several of my photos in honor of the day?

Proud to be an American — Patriotic image put together as a composite from Lincoln Rogers images. All rights reserved, Lincoln Rogers. 2021

Do you know how Flag Day in the USA started? Here is the detail…

Flag Day in the USA commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. The Flag Resolution, passed on June 14, 1777, stated: “Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”

And now you know! Happy Flag Day fellow Americans.

Happy Flag Day fellow Americans!

Night Bull Riding Action

I was finally able to get the new camera (Canon EOS 1Dx Mark III) out to some night rodeo action. First of all, it felt good to be taking action shots again. I love the challenge of action shooting.

First things first, though. A rodeo always has a patriotic National Anthem, and the 2021 Elizabeth Stampede’s XTreme Bulls did it right…

A Bald Eagle made an appearance at the start of the Friday night bull riding at the 2021 Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo. It would be in the arena during the singing of the National Anthem.

Once the sun goes down, it has often been a different story, as night time action can be a significant obstacle for me with my 14-year-old 1D Mark III camera. As you can imagine, I was eager to experience shooting with the new 1Dx Mark III.

It did not disappoint.

In the past, I had to leave a night rodeo when the sun went down. A lot of the outdoor arena lights are fine for watching a rodeo from the stands, but not for photography purposes. Just not enough light to support a fast enough shutter speed to capture the action. And my older EOS 1D just did not have the High ISO capability to bump the shutter speed and still have usable images.

A primary stock contractor for the 2021 Elizabeth Stampede Bull Riding competition, Summit Pro Rodeo, always brings top-flight animal athletes to the popular and award winning small town rodeo.

As you can see from the above image, the new Canon EOS 1Dx Mark III allowed me to stay and shoot the bull riding action under the lights. While my older version had a usable ISO of about 2,500, the new 1Dx Mark III allowed me to shoot the bull riding with an ISO of 25,000 and still have usable photos to send to the magazine that will publish my coverage. It is a massive difference, and will boost my freelance capabilities by a significant amount.

A winning ride under the lights…

Montana cowboy Parker Breding rode a high-kicking Hot Shot in front of a sold-out crowd for 88-points and the 2021 Elizabeth Stampede XTreme Bulls title on Friday June 04, 2021.

I am highly satisfied, so far, with the Canon EOS 1Dx Mark III’s capabilities and am looking forward to working over this coming weekend to put it through even more paces.

So far, so good!
