I had a photo spread of mine published on The Fence Post magazine’s website. It will also be in this coming week’s print edition. TWENTY photos from the 2022 record breaking and award winning Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo! Click on the link or the image to go to the published photo spread!

The Friday night Extreme Bulls competition at the Elizabeth Stampede sells out well in advance every year, because the fans are always treated to well-known bull riders and athletic beasts with bad attitudes.

A 41-Year-Old Bull Rider? What???

41-year-old Ardie Maier of South Dakota arrived at the 2022 Elizabeth Stampede and promptly earned second place overall with an electric 82-point ride aboard a Summit Pro Rodeo Company bull named Jam Session during Sunday afternoon’s “Red, White and Blue Rodeo” in Elizabeth, CO.

41-year-old bull rider Ardie Maier of South Dakota got the Sunday crowd cheering as he notched a successful 82-point score aboard Jam Session to briefly take the lead in the standings during the 2022 Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo. Maier was the runner-up in the PRCA bull riding at the Elizabeth, CO rodeo and earned $1,716.00 for his 8-second ride.

That’s right. You read it correctly. 41 years old and still riding bulls. And doing it successfully! John Wayne famously said “Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway,” but there is no way. I can’t even imagine getting on a bull after the age of 40. But he could. Chase your dreams, people!!!

Champs… Past & Present

There are a lot of reasons I enjoy photographing the Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo in Elizabeth, CO. 1 – It is a small town rodeo and I appreciate that vibe, having grown up in a small town in the Midwest, surrounded by lakes, rural farmland and orchards. 2 – The people that put on the rodeo and all the volunteers that make it work are incredible. Quality folks all the way to their core. And because good things come in threes… 3 – World champions past and present will make appearances at the small rodeo, which lets you know what a quality run rodeo it really is.

Along those lines, I photographed the Friday night Extreme Bulls competition and was blessed to be able to talk afterwards with 7-time PRCA world champion bull rider Sage Kimzey AND ProRodeo Hall of Fame bull rider Charlie Sampson. To top it off? They are both great guys.

ProRodeo Hall of Fame bull rider Charlie Sampson (left) poses with 7-time PRCA world champion bull rider Sage Kimzey (right) behind the chutes of the award winning Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo in Elizabeth, CO following the Extreme Bulls competition on Friday June 03, 2022. Kimzey treated the sold-out crowd to a wild ride aboard a young athletic bull, but was unsuccessful in notching a qualified ride.

I love what I do!

I’ve been on a a bit of a self-induced content creation blitz the last week or so as the award winning Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo is coming up quick (first weekend of June). This latest video is a fast-paced piece that is a compilation of my photography of that rodeo over the years 2003-2021. It’s been a pleasure to cover that rodeo for publication in numerous magazines over the last couple of decades. Click on the link or the image to go to the video on the Rumble platform.

The Elizabeth Stampede’s Blazing Saddles drill team impressed the crowd with a patriotic routine during Sunday afternoon’s Red, White and Blue Rodeo (June 05, 2016).

I hope you enjoy!

I just created and uploaded a recap video of the 2021 Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo in Elizabeth, CO. The short video (just over a minute long) is a compilation of video and photography that I shot over the four days of the rodeo’s run (June 03-06, 2021). It is uploaded on Rumble. Give it a look and let me know what you think! Just click on the following link or the image to go to the video.

It wasn’t just the rodeo cowboys that were the athletes inside the arena at the 2021 Elizabeth Stampede. The bucking stock brought by Summit Pro Rodeo Company, like Lakota Park bucking off Mason Snyder, was also worth the price of admission.

Bull riding, that is! The 10th annual Castle Rock Bull Riding & Bull Challenge took place with two performances in front of large crowds on Saturday February 12, 2022 in Castle Rock, CO. 100+ bull riders competed, along with 33 stock contractors bringing teams of 3 bulls each. Both the bull riders and the stock contractors were vying to earn a share of over $25,000 in prize money. My article and photos have been published online by The Fence Post magazine: https://www.thefencepost.com/news/a-decade-of-bull/

Rafter R Bulls’ Red Bear showed the kind of animal athleticism that ensured Divide, CO bull rider Duece Brown was not going to be able to stay aboard during Saturday afternoon’s Castle Rock Bull Riding performance at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Castle Rock, CO (February 12, 2022).

Mini Bulls!

I had the opportunity (and good fortune) to be able to talk with a couple of great Colorado guys who have started a Mini Bull contracting operation. Best friends Duncan Cornell and Cory Hazen are good family men and Christian guys who used to bull ride and now own Bijou Buckers Mini Bulls out of Simla, CO.

My article and accompanying photography were published in The Fence Post magazine and the article is also on The Fence Post magazine’s website — https://www.thefencepost.com/news/eeny-meeny-mighty-minis/

Cory Hazen (far left) and Duncan Cornell (far right) head out on horseback with several of their children to gather their herd of Mini Bulls in order to get them ready for a September 2021 Mini Bull event in Colorado Springs the next day.

I enjoyed meeting them and talking with them while they were on the job and with their families.

Bull Fighter Gains a New Perspective…

There are bad days at the office and then there are BAD days at the office.

A bull fighter in the 2021 Responder Relief Rodeo in Kiowa, CO (August 21, 2021) had one of those days where a beast with a bad attitude decided to help him look at life from a fresh perspective.

A bull fighter found himself gaining a new perspective after being tossed in the air by one of the bulls in the 2021 Responder Relief Rodeo in Kiowa, CO on August 21, 2021. The rodeo benefits the Responder Relief Foundation, which contributes to the families of fallen first responders and helps the critically injured.

They said he was “very sore” the next day, but that he is all right. I bet he’ll tell you looking at life from a new perspective ain’t always what it’s cracked up to be…

2021 Cheyenne Frontier Days Victory Photos

The Fence Post magazine has previously published my article and photo spread images from the 2021 Cheyenne Frontier Days championship round of rodeo. One thing about Cheyenne is that there are always more photos to be shared from there than can fit into magazines!

As a result, I thought I would post on this blog 10 victory images from the 10 categories that win titles and buckles at the historic Wyoming rodeo. Due to space limitations, most of these images did not make the pages of the magazine, so I wanted them to see life here in this blog.

I hope you enjoy.

3-time PRCA world champion bareback cowboy Tim O’Connell rode MLW’s Irish Eyes to an 89-point score and a Cheyenne Frontier Days title during Sunday’s championship round on August 01, 2021. The win was O’Connell’s second Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo title.
Sawyer Gilbert of Buffalo, SD (middle) poses in front of the big crowd with her championship saddle after winning the 2021 Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo Women’s Breakaway Roping event. 2021 was the just the second year of CFD hosting the event and the first year they added even money with the rest of the rodeo events.
7-time NFR qualifier Marty Yates went first in the Tie Down Roping and posted the championship round’s fastest time of 10.3 seconds to win the 2021 CFD buckle on August 01, 2021.
Utah cowboy Stetson Wright rode a high kicking Feather Fluffer for 90 points in Sunday’s (August 01) championship round for the saddle bronc title at the 2021 Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo.
Heeler Jade Corkill was in process of throwing his loop for a successful run of 10.2 seconds to help win a Cheyenne title with Clay Smith. The win was Corkill’s third Cheyenne buckle (’09, ’13, ’21).
Montana Steer Wrestler Newt Novich tied a Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo arena record with this 5.1-second time in Sunday’s (August 01) championship round to win the buckle and a big check.
25-year-old Kansas Steer Roper Cole Patterson was all smiles when he was congratulated and interviewed inside the stadium arena after winning the title at the 2021 CFD.
3-time world champion barrel racer Hailey Kinsel and her popular mare “Sister” nailed down the fastest time of 17.30 seconds in the short go to win the CFD buckle on Sunday August 01, 2021.
Australian bull rider Ky Hamilton rode a leaping bull to earn the best score of the entire Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo and take home the 2021 CFD title.
Utah cowboy Stetson Wright acknowledges the applause of the big crowd as he was awarded the All Around title at the 2021 Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo in Cheyenne, WY. Wright won the title by earning money in both the saddle bronc and bull riding competitions (placing 1st in saddle bronc and 4th in bull riding) to become the only roughstock cowboy to earn consecutive CFD All Around buckles since the legendary Jim Shoulders did it way back in 1963-1964.
