On the last weekend of the 2022 National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO, the cattle dogs showed their stuff. Watching top-notch working dogs in action is always a treat and this year was no different. My article and photos about the cattle dog competition are now online at The Fence Post’s website. Use the following link — https://www.thefencepost.com/news/dog-day-afternoon-2/ — or click on the photo to take you to the article.

As one of the cattle decides to run in a different direction, the dog is there in a burst of speed and attitude to remind it to cooperate. Athleticism, quickness, and even the flash of teeth are requirements in a good cattle dog. “(Your dog has) to have that strength. That presence,” said 2022 NWSS Cattle Dog competition winner James Butler when discussing cattle dogs at the NWSS venue.

Bulls, Barrels, Mutton & Mini’s raise money in Kiowa, CO for the state of Colorado’s fallen first responders and those who have been critically injured

You can read about it in my article with photos on the website of The Fence Post magazine.

https://www.thefencepost.com/news/bulls-barrels-mutton-and-minis-raise-money-in-kiowa-colo/

The 5th annual Responder Relief Rodeo in Kiowa, CO raised money for the Responder Relief Foundation and its mission to provide financial support to families of fallen first responders, as well as provide funds to first responders who have been critically injured.
With eleven stock contractors supplying bulls, there were “forty-some-odd” bulls that were bucked in the 5th annual Responder Relief Rodeo in Kiowa, CO, a rodeo that raises money for the Responder Relief Foundation and its mission to provide financial support to families of fallen first responders, as well as provide funds to first responders who have been critically injured. The popular bull riding, barrel racing, mutton busting, and mini bull riding event drew its largest crowd of 800-1,000 on Saturday night (August 21, 2021), prompting organizers to consider expanding the event to two days in the future.

Having one of my photos on the cover of a magazine never gets old to me.

The editors make the choice for their covers and I appreciate it when God blesses me as they choose an image of mine. Many thanks to The Fence Post magazine for choosing one of my photos from the Greeley Stampede rodeo action in 2021 to make the cover of the July 5th print edition.

The historic Greeley Stampede returned in 2021 for its 99th running and the surrounding community showed up in huge numbers to support their big summer rodeo and the concerts and events that are also held in the 8,000+ seat arena.

The Fence Post magazine has published my Greeley Stampede coverage in a photo spread that is now out on their website and will be in their upcoming July 5th print edition. Please click on the link or photo to take a look! https://www.thefencepost.com/news/2021-greeley-stampede/

At the conclusion of 2021 rodeo action, Beutler and Son Rodeo Company bucking horses were let loose inside the Greeley Stampede arena to show the appreciative crowd how the horses look when they’re not competing against a cowboy.

Brain Freeze…

It’s funny how the mind can work…

It’s a cold, snowy day outside, so my brain went searching for memories of warmer days.  Of course, warm days meant summertime – summertime meant rodeo – and then rodeo meant the world famous Cheyenne Frontier Days – which meant thinking back on the time I spent this year photographing that rodeo for a magazine or two.

Cheyenne Frontier Days (CFD) has a “photographer’s pit” at the back of their large outdoor arena.  It’s like a concrete bunker where the professional photographers covering the rodeo walk down a number of steps to enter.  The location brings us eye level with the arena sand, which makes for some spectacular photo opportunities.  I was able to get a number of shots this year that I really liked, and a couple of them were turned into cover photos for The Fence Post magazine’s regional issues – one for Colorado and the other for Nebraska.  Since I was thinking of them, I thought I’d share them here, as well.

Image

(Above) Tie Down Roper Scott Kormos pocketed $19,462 from the 2013 CFD, making him the rodeo’s top money winner.

Image

(Above) Nebraska saddle bronc cowboy Cort Scheer earned 4th place overall after successfully riding Thunderstruck in the championship round.

See how the brain can work?  It’s freezing outside, but I’ve got summertime memories to keep things warm.

Have a great day and don’t let your horse come home without ya!
