South Dakota competitor Chance Schott was the only bull rider to make a successful ride in Greeley Stampede’s 2022 short go (June 30). As a result, his electric 88-point ride aboard Beutler and Son Rodeo Company’s “Overpass” earned him $5,000 for the short go and another $3,630 for winning the average at the 100th Greeley Stampede.

So you think your job is rough? Try having your job description include staying as close as possible to charging bulls inside an enclosed arena while trying not to be hit or trampled. That would be the American Bull Fighting competition held at the 100th Greeley Stampede in Greeley, CO (July 02, 2022). My photo spread of the event is now published online. Cowboy mounted shooters were also on hand for a contest of their own. https://www.thefencepost.com/news/dodge-bull-at-the-100th-greeley-stampede/
Sometimes the smart bulls just figure out how to hit bull fighters. Zigging when he should have zagged, Chris Monroe got caught by the head and horns of a bull during first round action of the 2022 American Bull Fighting competition on July 02 and did not qualify to advance.
I was happy my job description that day was taking photos!

Oklahoma saddle bronc rider Hardy Braden had the ride of his professional life aboard the famous Killer Bee at the 100th Greeley Stampede. The duo scored an arena record 89.50 points and Braden walked away with the saddle bronc title at the historic venue.

Saddle bronc cowboy Hardy Braden rode one of the most famous bucking horses in the business — Killer Bee — for a new arena record at the 100th Greeley Stampede in Greeley, CO during the final round of rodeo action on June 30, 2022. The 89.50-point score bested the previous record of 88 points set by Wade Sundell in 2018 and tied by Ryder Wright in 2019. “It is quite something, actually,” said Braden when told his score set a new record. “I am kind of at a loss. It was the 100th anniversary, what better way to do that then get an arena record and win the 100th.”
Oklahoma saddle bronc rider Hardy Braden drew what was announced as “the most famous bucking horse of all time” in Killer Bee from Beutler and Son Rodeo Company, and the duo put on a big show that culminated in an arena record 89.50 points and the overall title at the 100th Greeley Stampede (June 30, 2022).
Pretty cool moment to see in person and nice to be able to talk to the humble cowboy about it. A new article about it will be published soon in The Fence Post magazine with more conversation and more photos.

Texas barrel racer Shelley Morgan leaned close in to the third barrel on her way to stopping the timers in 16.39 seconds, which was the fastest time of the June 30th championship round at the 100th Greeley Stampede Rodeo. The time also earned Morgan the 2022 Greeley Stampede buckle with the best time on three head of 49.39 seconds.
Congrats to Shelley Morgan for the 2022 Greeley title!

My latest article with photos has been published on The Fence Post magazine’s website. I traveled last Sunday (June 26) to the 100th Greeley Stampede in Greeley, CO to photograph and talk to participants and visitors who were taking part in and having fun at the historic venue. The story focuses on the family-friendly environment and tradition of the Greeley Stampede. The Edgerly family from Greeley had a blast participating in a sack race (mom won this one!) and other throw-back family activities on offer during the Sunday Family Funday on June 26th at the 2022 Greeley Stampede. The coffee sacks were a nod to the original events offering free coffee to the regions potato farmers to help entice them to attend back in the 1920’s.

I enjoy looking for interesting moments while I am photographing an event for publication. One such moment arrived while I was covering 2022’s 100th Greeley Stampede on Sunday June 26. A rodeo pickup man stopped his horse right in front of where I was shooting. As I always do when a horse is nearby, I enjoyed looking at the horse! That is when I noticed the Greeley Stampede’s logo was reflected from the arena wall in the eye of the horse. So I took the shot and thought it would be cool if it turned out.

I like what I do!

A new short article of mine (with excellent help from Bonnie Wheatley) has been published on the Barrel Racing Magazine website. Oklahoma barrel racer Paige Jones and 10-year-old Famous Hayday stopped the timers in a fast 16.73-seconds on Sunday afternoon at 2022’s 100th Greeley Stampede rodeo. That time put her more than a half-second ahead of the rest of the field, so far, in the first round of barrel racing. Oklahoma barrel racer (and 2020 WPRA Rookie of the Year) Paige Jones and 10-year-old Famous Hayday tear into the first turn on their way to setting the pace at the 100th Greeley Stampede with a time of 16.73 seconds on Sunday afternoon (June 26, 2022).
With a degree from Colorado State University’s equine sciences program and working for the American Quarter Quarter Horse Association in her rearview mirror, along with a goal of obtaining a master’s degree on the road ahead of her, 25-year-old Ashley Baller is an accomplished, bilingual, first generation cowgirl from Parker, Colo., who earned the honor of wearing the iconic turquoise Miss Rodeo Colorado crown and representing the state of Colorado for the year 2022. I had the pleasure of talking with her about becoming and being 2022’s Miss Rodeo Colorado during a break in action at the Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo. The Q&A with photos has been published on The Fence Post magazine’s website and will be in the upcoming print edition (Monday June 20). The Greeley Stampede Rodeo is celebrating its 100 Year milestone in 2022. Originally billed as the Greeley Spud Rodeo in 1922 to honor the area’s potato farmers, the Greeley, CO event has been a long-running staple of the region. I spoke with Justin Watada, the Greeley Stampede’s General Manager, by phone about their upcoming 100th (running June 23-July 4, 2022) and the Q&A with historical photos from the early years, along with a number of my photos spanning 2005-2021, has already been published on The Fence Post magazine’s website and will be in this coming Monday’s print edition. Cowboy history and tradition are always honored at the Greeley Stampede and the Longhorn cattle are regular sights inside and outside the rodeo arena. In this photo, the Longhorns create a western spectacle for the fans before the start of the 2013 championship round of rodeo on July 4th.
