My wife and I went to the mountains recently to check out the last of the fall color. Heading up towards Mt Evans before snow was forecast for the next day, we were able to see some of the last Aspens with brilliant color in the season.

While the Aspen color was gorgeous, they weren’t the only scenes of beauty the Colorado mountains had to offer us. On our way up the mountain, we stopped by this peaceful river scene to admire it and take some photos.

The variety of beauty to be found in the Colorado Rocky Mountains is just amazing. What a blessing from God. May we never take it lightly.

Owls Are Cool…

I’ve always thought owls are cool. They look great, they’re amazing hunters, and they are symbolic to so many people, as well as people groups.

We had one stop by our house this spring. It perched on a pillar within feet of a large glass sliding door, as it scanned our property for rabbits, birds and/or other varmints. As a result of its perch, we were able to watch it for quite some time, which allowed me to grab a camera and sneak closer while its back was turned. As you can see from the photo, its back wasn’t turned for long.

This is a good time of year, that is for certain. Especially in regions where winter means snow and freezing temperatures. More sunshine = warmer temps. Things start to green and grow, while birds return and wildlife becomes more active.

The changing of the seasons is an automatic reminder that we can change, as well. The winters of our attitudes and moods don’t need to continue all year long. Let them warm and green and grow, along with the spring.

Ask the animals and the earth…

Grand Teton National Park (Wyoming, USA) is located just south of Yellowstone National Park. Within that area encompassing those two national parks is some of the most beautiful scenery and wildlife viewing anywhere on earth.

Some people look at all that natural beauty and think it arrived over time by accident. I can’t do that. Just like it says in the book of Job, chapter 12, the animals, the birds, the fish, the earth… everything… speaks to me of a powerful Creator and intelligent design.

I get that plenty of people don’t agree with that. We all get to choose.

My choice is to step back and appreciate the awesome beauty created by the Lord whom Job was talking about. I encourage everyone to visit that area of the USA. Whether or not you believe in an all-powerful Creator, as I do, the majestic beauty of that area will move you.

A Life Untamed (Cowboy Poetry)

Sitting here watching the thermometer hover at zero degrees today brought to mind the toughness and spirit of the cowboys who used to drive the massive cattle herds to market rain, sleet or snow in the old west.  Then I caught myself, because contemporary cowboys are still working the massive cattle herds no matter what mother nature throws their way.

This cowboy poem of mine is dedicated to cowboys past and present and was published in 2005 by the good folks at CowboyPoetry.com.

Dedicated to the working cowboy – past and present

The western trails bore Longhorn,
Over oceans of grass Plain,
And Cowboys rode like captains,
Through the waves of sun and rain.

4-inch brims and rowelled spurs,
Along with chaps and Latigo,
Matching leather on face and saddle,
Of a seasoned, working pro.

Some say the era of the Cowboy,
Is but a faded dream at best,
But that independent spirit,
Remains the heartbeat of the West.

Miles removed from concrete jungles,
On open vistas kissed by sun,
Modern Cowboys ride the range,
Just like those days the West was won.

So word and song is raised in honor,
To everyone who bears the flame;
Who stokes the fire of admiration,
For a life no one will tame.

All Bark, No Bite…

My bark is worse than – uh… wait a minute.  That sounded better in my head…

I was playing around with some textures in onOne software’s Perfect Photo Suite 8 yesterday and was able to get this look.  I like how the peeling texture gave off a look of old tree bark laid flat, especially when paired with my photograph of a mountain scene from Keystone, Colorado.  Nothing like a little tree bark art to mix with a high mountain forest.

I came across the Perfect Photo software when I found a free download of Perfect Effects 4 from onOne a number of months ago.  I liked how it worked and so I tried the free Beta of Perfect Photo Suite 8 to see what I thought.  It’s a dizzying array of effects and options to make any photography sing.  I now have the full version that was just released on November 26 of this year.

After applying this texture through the software and experimenting with it in many different ways, I’m happy to say I’m now all “bark” and no bite!
