Good vittles! We all love good food, right? And authentic chuckwagon cooking is some of the best.

My article and photos about some of the chuckwagon participants at the 125th Cheyenne Frontier Days is published now on The Fence Post magazine’s website. Chuckwagon crews are great people, and great to talk with, as well.

https://www.thefencepost.com/news/for-the-love-of-chuckwagons/

Chuckwagon Cookoff participants are also judged on the authenticity and period correctness of their wagons. As a result, the Cheyenne Frontier Days competition brings a great assortment of authentic wagons to the event, including this Newton Wagon Works chuckwagon brought by Sam Howell of Odessa, Texas.

As I say in my article, “Whether it is rodeo or even authentic cowboy cooking, the “Daddy of ‘Em All” makes people love coming to Cheyenne Frontier Days.”

The people and events of history are fascinating and good museums tie them together in interesting ways. The Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum is one of those interesting places and, if you ever visit, you will enjoy learning about Cheyenne Frontier Days and its colorful and cowboy past.

I had the chance to visit the museum during the 2021 Cheyenne Frontier Days (the 125th CFD) and talk to the museum’s Executive Director, Morgan Marks. My article and photography that came out of that visit is now out on the website of The Fence Post magazine.

https://www.thefencepost.com/news/cfd-old-west-museum-stronger-than-ever/

Part of a large display of banners honoring the 90 years of Miss Frontiers at the Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo, the first four Miss Frontier banners hang together on a wall in the museum. These banners represent the years 1931-1934.

Cheyenne Frontier Days itself is a bucket list experience. The Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum is a part of the reason why.

The Cheyenne Frontier Days in Cheyenne, Wyoming is one of the coolest events on the planet. It has been going for 125 years and is also the “World’s Largest Outdoor Rodeo.”

One of my favorite things at Cheyenne is the chuckwagon cooking competition. Not so much the competition itself, but the chuckwagons and all the great people that own, run, and help out with those wagons.

I met more great people in Cheyenne in 2021. Adam Hanger from Middlebrook, Virginia and his family and friends brought their chuckwagon (The Shenandoah) all the way from Middlebrook, Virginia to compete for the third time at the 2021 Cheyenne Frontier Days. I had a great conversation with Adam about why they travel all the way out to Cheyenne with their chuckwagon and parts of that conversation will be in a future article, along with photos, about the chuckwagons at Cheyenne.

If you haven’t attended Cheyenne Frontier Days, put it on your bucket list!

A Life Untamed (Cowboy Poetry)

Sitting here watching the thermometer hover at zero degrees today brought to mind the toughness and spirit of the cowboys who used to drive the massive cattle herds to market rain, sleet or snow in the old west.  Then I caught myself, because contemporary cowboys are still working the massive cattle herds no matter what mother nature throws their way.

This cowboy poem of mine is dedicated to cowboys past and present and was published in 2005 by the good folks at CowboyPoetry.com.

A Life Untamed (by Lincoln Rogers, 2005)

Dedicated to the working cowboy – past and present

The western trails bore Longhorn,
Over oceans of grass Plain,
And Cowboys rode like captains,
Through the waves of sun and rain.

4-inch brims and rowelled spurs,
Along with chaps and Latigo,
Matching leather on face and saddle,
Of a seasoned, working pro.

Some say the era of the Cowboy,
Is but a faded dream at best,
But that independent spirit,
Remains the heartbeat of the West.

Miles removed from concrete jungles,
On open vistas kissed by sun,
Modern Cowboys ride the range,
Just like those days the West was won.

So word and song is raised in honor,
To everyone who bears the flame;
Who stokes the fire of admiration,
For a life no one will tame.

Honorable Mention (Cowboy Poetry)

I thought I’d leave you with a cowboy poem I wrote back in 2003 and which was published online by the good folks at CowboyPoetry.com, the best dad-gum cowboy poetry website in the world.

ImageHonorable Mention (by Lincoln Rogers, 2003)

I hear the name of “Cowboy,”
Thrown about the world today.
By the sneer on those who say it,
It ain’t respect they aim to pay.

Their voices drip with insult,
As they mock those of the West.
The ones in times of trouble,
Who weren’t afraid to face a test.

Every time I hear the term,
It does remind me of those men.
Sweat and blood spilled on the earth,
Before they’d saddle up again.

There were lawmen with a badge,
Like Wyatt Earp and Masterson.
Or Jesse James and Billy the Kid,
Two outlaw heroes on the run.

But the image I can’t shake,
Its picture branded in my mind.
Is horse and rider on the trail,
Through day and night and storm unkind.

Those ‘pokes did work I can’t imagine,
Riding mounts close as a brother.
Running cattle through the plains,
And lookin’ out for one another.

I’ve read their tales and history,
And I believe the words are true.
Men tough enough to work the range,
Were not the many but the few.

So when you speak that sacred title,
About a Pard with boots and hat.
To honor those who rode before us,
Make sure you smile when you say that.

Have a great day and don’t let your horse come home without ya!
