Independence Day. 4th of July. The American holiday that celebrates independence, freedom and liberty evokes different passions for people. For me, it always stirs a deep emotional response as I consider all the sacrifices made throughout the USA’s history by people believing their lives were not such a steep price to pay for future generations to live in a country free of tyranny and totalitarianism. We seem to be on the precipice of losing our freedoms to an ever encroaching government in this day and age, but those sacrifices made in the past will be honored by me and my family in the present. God bless you and God save America. And Happy 4th of July!

National Western Stock Show fans and fans of its rodeo love their country and are proud to honor and respect the American flag. The NWSS rodeo crew goes out of its way to create memorable ceremonies like this rendition of the National Anthem with the lights off and the spotlight on before the start of action during the final weekend of the 2022 NWSS.

I Can’t Help But Love It

The Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo designates its Sunday afternoon performance as the “Red, White and Blue Rodeo” and it is a “Stars and Stripes” affair to honor local service men and women both past and present. They really do a nice job of showing honor and respect for those who have served in the military, as well as honoring the patriotic symbols that harken back to the founding principles of our country. They rocked the singing of the National Anthem by bringing out this Bald Eagle and holding it aloft while it flapped its wings during the closing lines of the anthem. It was an inspiring sight and environment and I loved capturing it with my camera.

A sold out Sunday afternoon crowd at the 2022 Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo were
treated to the sight of our nation’s National Bird, the Bald Eagle, held aloft near
the end of the singing of the National Anthem before the start of action inside
the arena. The third and last PRCA rodeo performance on Sunday afternoon
is the Stampede’s Red, White & Blue Rodeo.

How cool is that?

The Last Remaining…

Those words sound almost mournful. The last remaining…

That means there used to be more, maybe even a plentiful supply.

But now there is one.

Drawing their sabres, the last Marine Mounted Color Guard presents the colors as ready for the singing of the National Anthem and the kickoff of rodeo action before a sold-out Saturday night crowd (June 05) at the 2021 Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo in Elizabeth, CO.

The last remaining Marine Corps Mounted Color Guard participated again in the 2021 Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo in Elizabeth, CO. If you appreciate having Old Glory honored with a bit of pomp and circumstance, you would love to see how these Marines ride in with the colors and present them for the singing of the National Anthem.

It is awesome. They are awesome.

And they are the last remaining…

Honorable Mention (Cowboy Poetry)

I thought I’d leave you with a cowboy poem I wrote back in 2003 and which was published online by the good folks at CowboyPoetry.com, the best dad-gum cowboy poetry website in the world.

ImageHonorable Mention (by Lincoln Rogers, 2003)

I hear the name of “Cowboy,”
Thrown about the world today.
By the sneer on those who say it,
It ain’t respect they aim to pay.

Their voices drip with insult,
As they mock those of the West.
The ones in times of trouble,
Who weren’t afraid to face a test.

Every time I hear the term,
It does remind me of those men.
Sweat and blood spilled on the earth,
Before they’d saddle up again.

There were lawmen with a badge,
Like Wyatt Earp and Masterson.
Or Jesse James and Billy the Kid,
Two outlaw heroes on the run.

But the image I can’t shake,
Its picture branded in my mind.
Is horse and rider on the trail,
Through day and night and storm unkind.

Those ‘pokes did work I can’t imagine,
Riding mounts close as a brother.
Running cattle through the plains,
And lookin’ out for one another.

I’ve read their tales and history,
And I believe the words are true.
Men tough enough to work the range,
Were not the many but the few.

So when you speak that sacred title,
About a Pard with boots and hat.
To honor those who rode before us,
Make sure you smile when you say that.

Have a great day and don’t let your horse come home without ya!

Soooo… is it obvious that I’ve got pie on the brain?  That’s all right, there’s no need to panic.  It’s not contagious… unless you happen to be near our kitchen.  Then those simple ingredients in the photo above will leave the pleasure center of your brain begging for mercy.

Isn’t that how life should be?

Simple ingredients.  Nothing fancy.  You can find them anywhere.  In this case, it is chopped pecans, caramel squares and eggs.  Combine those simple ingredients with a few others, bake in a heated oven and voila!  Caramel Pecan Pie.  Your taste buds will never be the same.

In the case of life, it’s much the same way.  Really.  Simple ingredients combined together can make life sweet.  Ingredients like love, respect, trust and faith.  We’ve all got them inside of us.  Every one of us.  And you know what?  It’s up to us whether we will share them or not; allow them to be combined and heated in the oven of life’s challenges.

If we will, the end result will always be sweet.  And we’ll never be the same…

Have a great Thanksgiving holiday and don’t let your horse come home without ya!
