My article and photos on the championship round of rodeo at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO have been published on The Fence Post’s website, and should be in their upcoming print edition. It was a great, high-energy championship round with good story lines. I hope you enjoy the story and photos — https://www.thefencepost.com/news/roping-riding-and-roughstock/

I’m still working on a few more stories from the NWSS and will post them when they are published!

Thanks for reading and God bless.

My new article with photos is now published online by The Fence Post magazine and will be in their upcoming print edition (January 23, 2023). It is about the high-profile freestyle reining competition at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver, CO. This year’s competition displayed great riding and creativity, but it also paid tribute to one of the event’s founders (Guy Vernon) who unexpectedly passed away in 2022. You can find the article online – https://www.thefencepost.com/news/not-just-another-guy/

Always looking to entertain the crowd and get them involved, Guy Vernon acknowledged their roaring applause with his trademark “raise the roof” gesture after completing a first place routine in 2013’s NWSS RAM Invitational Freestyle Reining competition. If you are in the Colorado area in January during the timeframe of the National Western Stock Show, the freestyle reining competition is one of the hottest and best tickets of the entire 16-day stock show. It sells out in advance each year, so get those tickets early. You won’t regret it.

“Best Freestyle in the world” at NWSS

I love covering the RAM Invitational Freestyle Reining competition that takes place at Denver’s National Western Stock Show. Freestyle reining allows the contestants to choose their outfits/costumes, their music and their routines in the arena. Tons of creativity and oftentimes great lighting for dramatic photographs. The contestants consistently call this freestyle competition the best in the country, with a number of them over the years calling it the best in the world.

This routine by Sharee Schwartzenberger aboard her horse “Game Day Surprise” was one of my favorites this year. Very nice. There will be an upcoming story with photos published soon.

In a beautiful display of costume and horseback choreography set to stirring music, back-to-back NWSS freestyle reining winner and defending champion Sharee Schwartzenberger used fog, spotlights, and the audience members’ camera phones to create an atmosphere of clouds and stars as she paid tribute to the important people in our lives, those “stars” that surround us and that we should never take for granted. Schwartzenberger’s bridleless routine on “Game Day Surprise” scored 222 points, which was good enough for 3rd place in the prestigious event. Image by Lincoln Rogers – all rights reserved.

Congratulations to Franktown, CO horse trainer Devin Warren on winning the prestigious $25,000 RAM Invitational Freestyle Reining competition at the historic national Western Stock Show in Denver, CO. Warren’s 226.5-point score riding Lil Joes Cash N Gold put him atop the field for the sold-out competition held inside the National Western Events Center’s Cinch Arena. It was a great competition. I will be putting together a story and more photos in the near future.

Three of my photographs from 2022’s 100th Greeley Stampede Rodeo were published to accompany this article written by Bonnie Wheatley in Barrel Racing Magazine. You can click on the link or the image to get to the article. Many thanks to Ms. Wheatley for using my photography. https://barrelracingmagazine.com/personalities/top-barrel-racers/greeley-stampede/

Texas barrel racer Shelley Morgan leaned close in to the third barrel on her way to stopping the timers in 16.39 seconds, which was the fastest time of the June 30th championship round at the 100th Greeley Stampede Rodeo. The time also earned Morgan the 2022 Greeley Stampede buckle with the best time on three head of 49.39 seconds.

Congrats to Shelley Morgan for the 2022 Greeley title!

A new short article of mine (with excellent help from Bonnie Wheatley) has been published on the Barrel Racing Magazine website. Oklahoma barrel racer Paige Jones and 10-year-old Famous Hayday stopped the timers in a fast 16.73-seconds on Sunday afternoon at 2022’s 100th Greeley Stampede rodeo. That time put her more than a half-second ahead of the rest of the field, so far, in the first round of barrel racing. Queens Aren’t Just in England…

Some of the most popular people at a rodeo are the rodeo queens. They work hard inside and outside the arenas throughout every rodeo and they do a great job of being ambassadors of the sport to younger generations, as well as adults who aren’t familiar with rodeo and the western/agricultural way of life. I had the opportunity to have a conversation with 2022 Miss Rodeo Colorado Ashley Baller during a break between the Saturday afternoon and Saturday night rodeos at the 2022 Elizabeth Stampede in Elizabeth, CO. I will be turning it into a Q&A that will be published soon in The Fence Post magazine, but wanted to give a shout out to all the rodeo queens that will be working hard during the busy summer rodeo season.

2022 Miss Rodeo Colorado, Ashley Baller, carried the Colorado state flag in front of a sell-out crowd before the start of Sunday afternoon’s Red, White and Blue Rodeo at the 2022 Elizabeth Stampede (June 05).

19 Years of Photography in One Video!

I’ve been on a a bit of a self-induced content creation blitz the last week or so as the award winning Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo is coming up quick (first weekend of June). This latest video is a fast-paced piece that is a compilation of my photography of that rodeo over the years 2003-2021. It’s been a pleasure to cover that rodeo for publication in numerous magazines over the last couple of decades. Click on the link or the image to go to the video on the Rumble platform.

The Elizabeth Stampede’s Blazing Saddles drill team impressed the crowd with a patriotic routine during Sunday afternoon’s Red, White and Blue Rodeo (June 05, 2016).

I hope you enjoy!

A Conversation with Australian Horseman, Dan James

Renowned Aussie horse trainer, Dan James, added some showmanship to the last slide aboard Don Magnum in the 2019 $20,000 RAM Invitational Freestyle Reining competition at the National Western Stock Show. If you will notice, James has no bit or bridle on Don Magnum for this slide, having removed them in the middle of the performance.

I was blessed to be able to sit down and have a long conversation with world famous Australian horseman Dan James, while he was at the 2019 National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO (January 2019). The Fence Post magazine published the Q&A back at the end of January. Dan James is not only an amazing horseman, he is also a great person.

I hope you enjoy reading some of the conversation as much as I enjoyed having it with Dan James.

God bless,

Lincoln
