A new photo spread of mine has been published. The photos are from the final round of rodeo action at the 100th Greeley Stampede. https://www.thefencepost.com/news/championship-rodeo-at-100th-greeley-stampede-is-a-winner/

South Dakota competitor Chance Schott was the only bull rider to make a successful ride in Greeley Stampede’s 2022 short go (June 30). As a result, his electric 88-point ride aboard Beutler and Son Rodeo Company’s “Overpass” earned him $5,000 for the short go and another $3,630 for winning the average at the 100th Greeley Stampede.

Dodge Bull at the 100th Greeley Stampede

So you think your job is rough? Try having your job description include staying as close as possible to charging bulls inside an enclosed arena while trying not to be hit or trampled. That would be the American Bull Fighting competition held at the 100th Greeley Stampede in Greeley, CO (July 02, 2022). My photo spread of the event is now published online. Cowboy mounted shooters were also on hand for a contest of their own. https://www.thefencepost.com/news/dodge-bull-at-the-100th-greeley-stampede/

Sometimes the smart bulls just figure out how to hit bull fighters. Zigging when he should have zagged, Chris Monroe got caught by the head and horns of a bull during first round action of the 2022 American Bull Fighting competition on July 02 and did not qualify to advance.

I was happy my job description that day was taking photos!

Among the ranching, western and agricultural communities, Baxter Black’s columns and humor throughout the last 40+ years have been required reading. He put into plain words, with generous portions of humor, what was often thought to be difficult to communicate to those outside the agricultural community. As a large animal veterinarian, his credentials were always impeccable. And his columns and later books only upped the ante. Baxter Black passed away at the age of 77 in Benson, Ariz., on June 10, 2022. He will be greatly missed.

Black penned over 30 books and his syndicated column appeared in more than 100 publications across the country. He was a Christian and that faith and worldview infused all of his works.

Rachel Gabel over at The Fence Post magazine just put out a nice article about him and I wanted to share the link.

Bull riding, that is! The 10th annual Castle Rock Bull Riding & Bull Challenge took place with two performances in front of large crowds on Saturday February 12, 2022 in Castle Rock, CO. 100+ bull riders competed, along with 33 stock contractors bringing teams of 3 bulls each. Both the bull riders and the stock contractors were vying to earn a share of over $25,000 in prize money. My article and photos have been published online by The Fence Post magazine: https://www.thefencepost.com/news/a-decade-of-bull/

Rafter R Bulls’ Red Bear showed the kind of animal athleticism that ensured Divide, CO bull rider Duece Brown was not going to be able to stay aboard during Saturday afternoon’s Castle Rock Bull Riding performance at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Castle Rock, CO (February 12, 2022).

On the last weekend of the 2022 National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO, the cattle dogs showed their stuff. Watching top-notch working dogs in action is always a treat and this year was no different. My article and photos about the cattle dog competition are now online at The Fence Post’s website. Use the following link — https://www.thefencepost.com/news/dog-day-afternoon-2/ — or click on the photo to take you to the article.

As one of the cattle decides to run in a different direction, the dog is there in a burst of speed and attitude to remind it to cooperate. Athleticism, quickness, and even the flash of teeth are requirements in a good cattle dog. “(Your dog has) to have that strength. That presence,” said 2022 NWSS Cattle Dog competition winner James Butler when discussing cattle dogs at the NWSS venue.

It’s Colorado Mead, Honey!!!

Actually… it is both! Colorado Mead AND Colorado Honey.

My article with photography about Honnibrook Craft Meadery (in Castle Rock, CO) using premium Colorado honey from Lockhart Honey Farms for award winning success is now posted on The Fence Post magazine’s website.

https://www.thefencepost.com/news/its-colorado-mead-honey/

DJ Kurtz (foreground) and Michael Fagan, co-owners of Honnibrook Craft Meadery in Castle Rock, CO, discuss their mead making process while premium monofloral Colorado honey from Lockhart Honey Farms flows from a 55-gallon drum into a tank that will blend the honey, water, yeast and other nutrients as it is pumped into large vats to create a new batch of craft mead. Open since 2019, Honnibrook has picked up numerous awards for its “light and refreshing” style of mead.

I had a great time talking with Kurtz and Fagan, as well as Leo and Laura Lockhart, for the article. Many thanks to all four for their courtesy and generosity with their schedules.

And in case you were wondering… the mead is excellent!

I had the opportunity (and good fortune) to be able to talk with a couple of great Colorado guys who have started a Mini Bull contracting operation. Best friends Duncan Cornell and Cory Hazen are good family men and Christian guys who used to bull ride and now own Bijou Buckers Mini Bulls out of Simla, CO.

My article and accompanying photography were published in The Fence Post magazine and the article is also on The Fence Post magazine’s website — https://www.thefencepost.com/news/eeny-meeny-mighty-minis/

Cory Hazen (far left) and Duncan Cornell (far right) head out on horseback with several of their children to gather their herd of Mini Bulls in order to get them ready for a September 2021 Mini Bull event in Colorado Springs the next day.

I enjoyed meeting them and talking with them while they were on the job and with their families.

Bulls, Barrels, Mutton & Mini’s raise money in Kiowa, CO for the state of Colorado’s fallen first responders and those who have been critically injured

You can read about it in my article with photos on the website of The Fence Post magazine.

https://www.thefencepost.com/news/bulls-barrels-mutton-and-minis-raise-money-in-kiowa-colo/

The 5th annual Responder Relief Rodeo in Kiowa, CO raised money for the Responder Relief Foundation and its mission to provide financial support to families of fallen first responders, as well as provide funds to first responders who have been critically injured.
With eleven stock contractors supplying bulls, there were “forty-some-odd” bulls that were bucked in the 5th annual Responder Relief Rodeo in Kiowa, CO, a rodeo that raises money for the Responder Relief Foundation and its mission to provide financial support to families of fallen first responders, as well as provide funds to first responders who have been critically injured. The popular bull riding, barrel racing, mutton busting, and mini bull riding event drew its largest crowd of 800-1,000 on Saturday night (August 21, 2021), prompting organizers to consider expanding the event to two days in the future.

More Photos From 125th Cheyenne Frontier Days

I was busy at the 125th Cheyenne Frontier Days in 2021. Although I could only attend for two days, I made the most of them, being able to put together stories about the CFD Museum, the chuckwagon cooking, and the championship round of rodeo.

The Fence Post magazine’s website has published more photography of mine from Cheyenne. Follow the link and take a look!

https://www.thefencepost.com/news/the-125th-cheyenne-frontier-days-in-2021/

Utah cowboy Stetson Wright acknowledges the applause of the big crowd as he was awarded the All Around title at the 2021 Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo in Cheyenne, WY. Wright become the only roughstock cowboy to earn consecutive CFD All Around buckles since the legendary Jim Shoulders did it way back in 1963-1964.

Photographing and covering the Cheyenne Frontier Days is a great experience. I hope you enjoy the slice of the historic event that my images provide.

For the Love of Chuckwagons

Good vittles! We all love good food, right? And authentic chuckwagon cooking is some of the best.

My article and photos about some of the chuckwagon participants at the 125th Cheyenne Frontier Days is published now on The Fence Post magazine’s website. Chuckwagon crews are great people, and great to talk with, as well.

https://www.thefencepost.com/news/for-the-love-of-chuckwagons/

Chuckwagon Cookoff participants are also judged on the authenticity and period correctness of their wagons. As a result, the Cheyenne Frontier Days competition brings a great assortment of authentic wagons to the event, including this Newton Wagon Works chuckwagon brought by Sam Howell of Odessa, Texas.

As I say in my article, “Whether it is rodeo or even authentic cowboy cooking, the “Daddy of ‘Em All” makes people love coming to Cheyenne Frontier Days.”
